Claim
The European Parliament Elections 2009 were a landmark event and an opportunity to foster awareness and understanding of the EU and it’s contemporary role throughout all 27 EU Member States. With this in mind, Scholz & Friends developed an innovative campaign to entice voters to polling booths and have their voices heard.
Task
- Motivate an electorate of 375 million voters.
- Convey the magnitude and consequences of EU decision-making on the lives of ordinary citizens.
- Develop a coherent, pan-European campaign that can be easily adapted to the domestic political context of each EU Member State.
Idea
- Emphasizing the considerable difference that an individual vote can have on the future of the EU and its Member states.
- Implementing innovative PR measures, including 60 oversize 3D installations and mobile multimedia boxes, to provoke public discussion and generate media coverage.
Success
- Comprehensive media covery in each EU Member State complemented by effective use of social media platforms to target younger, first-time voters proved successful.
- Surveys indicated that 67.7 percent of voters could recall the campaign after elections were held.
- Participation rates were higher than anticipated, with eight EU Member States recording a significant increase in voter turnout.
